Ask Joyce Loomis-Kernek your barrel racing questions
I was born on a cattle ranch in the Mogollon mountain range near Cliff, N.M. We worked cattle on horseback and
played on our horses for fun. When I was nine, a neighbor gave my family several issues of Western Horseman magazine. I saw some barrel racers in those magazines and started
to take the mules and horses around the bushes in a cloverleaf pattern.
Then, my dad found some barrels for me. My brother and I had a part Shetland pony that we barrel raced in the local rodeos and fairs. It was then that I was bitten by the barrel racing
bug.
A hunting friend of my father's gave me a palomino horse that I named Pal. He was the first horse I ever attempted to train on the barrels and I won my first buckle on him at a local fair
in 1956. Since that time I have ridden, trained and shown hundreds of horses and literally travelled the world teaching and working with horses and people. (more on Bio page of www.loomis-kernek.com ).
I have written a book called "Barrel Racing - Just The Basics" and have a tape series on the same subject. You can view those products and others on my site: www.loomis-kernek.com
I currently live on the South Canadian river near Purcell, Oklahoma - the Quarter Horse capitol of the world. I raise and train horses and people and also have an intern program training
people to become trainers in the barrel horse industry. It is a delight to see the growth in the barrel horse industry and I truly enjoy helping people get better at what they love. It is
great to be working one on one with Elizabeth at Barrelracers.net to help riders of all levels and ages
